Home Remedies for Sinus Infection

loading...
Sinus infections are one of the most common infections across the world. Sinus attacks are caused by an infection in the sinuses or cavities that are present in the bones near the nose. When there is any swelling in these sinuses because of some infection, breathing becomes difficult, resulting in fever, headaches, and other discomforts. This is known as sinusitis.

Sinus infections usually set in after several days of having a cold or the flu. If you are prone to sinus infections try some preventative measures. As soon as you start to get a cold make sure that you drink plenty of water. Fluids will prevent mucous from becoming thick and keep the sinus cavities clear. Increase the humidity level in your home by using a portable humidifier or boil some water on the stove.

Symptoms of Sinus Infection:  A sinus can feel like a severe toothache or like a headache with tenderness under the eyebrows. Generally your nose may feel blocked and your voice has a nasal sound. It can last for weeks but most generally clear up within 7 days. Kids can be susceptible to sinus problems & may produce emotional troubles like irritability and a general unhappiness feeling, similar to adults. Sinusitis must be evaluated (checked) by a doctor.

Home Remedies for Sinus Infections

Hot Compresses and Poultices

To encourage drainage of mucus apply hot compresses or poultices to your sinuses. They are really old home remedies used by our grandmothers for sinus infection. You may use different aromatic oils (e.g.eucalyptus oil) in hot water, but the best natural cures are using ginger (Zingiber officinalis) or black mustard (Brassica nigra). Both stimulate the circulation strongly and help decongest stuffy nasal passages. This is the one of the best and effective home remedies for sinus infection.

Mix one drop of Eucalyptus Essential Oil, one drop of Tea Tree Essential Oil, and one drop of Pine Essential Oil together. Warm this mixture. Then, add the mixture to four cups of hot water. Dip in a clean cloth. Then, use the cloth as a hot compress over the sinus areas with your eyes closed and your head slightly elevated to encourage drainage. Be careful that the cloth is not hot enough to burn. Note: pine essential oil may cause high blood pressure to elevate further.

Consumption of garlic juice or garlic capsules. It has been said that garlic has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Since a sinus infection could be either bacterial or fungal in nature, the properties of garlic should be an effective natural cure.  Another option is to put some chopped fresh garlic in a bowl of hot water and inhale the steam 2-3 times a day. This is another effective home remedy for sinus infection. These are the best home remedies for sinus infection.
