The color of the urine can be used to suspect some diseases but modernly only its chemical and biological analysis is used to diagnose the diseases. In healthy people, the urine usually has a yellowish color. Any other variation in the color or tone of the urine may be suggestive that we have an alteration of the health problem. In this article we will analyze the different colors of urine and their different causes.
dark yellow
Yellow is the most common urine color, from light to dark tone depending on the concentration of water it contains, because if the person does not drink enough , the kidneys produce more concentrated and darker urine.

The yellow color may turn so dark that it looks brown. To doctors, these persistent dark tones make them suspect some type of liver dysfunction that should be checked.

They also change the shade of yellow asparagus intake and some drugs such as metronidazole. If there is a tiny loss of blood inside the urinary tract from the kidney to the bladder, the urine may also become darker.

Purple
This color of urine can be caused by the intake of berries or beets in large quantities and also occurs in people hospitalized with urinary tract infections by some bacteria such as Providencia stuartii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli or Enterococci . The reason is that they alkalize (less acidic than it should) urine.

 orange
The orange color in the urine may be a sign that it is very concentrated. It can also be a sign that urine has blood. Eating food with carotenoids in large quantities can also cause orange urine.

There are medications that can cause the urine to be orange. They are rifampicin, Pyridium and nitrofurantoin. Vitamin B2 can also leave the urine an intense orange color.

Green
This color change may be caused by the ingestion of dyes used in diagnostic tests such as methylene blue. There are foods such as asparagus or black licorice that can promote this urine color. Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria infection can also cause us to urinate green. There are medications such as amitriiptyline, indomethacin or propofol that can also cause the urine to turn green.

Red
This urine color can be caused by the presence of blood. Causes of suspected blood in urine should be treated by the doctor. There are foods and medications that can also cause the red color of the urine. Eating a large amount of beets or berries can cause the urine to turn red. Also that a person take medications such as heparin, varfarin, rifampicin or pyridium.

Blue
The urine may become blue for the same reasons why you may turn green. Also, medications such as triamterene, amitriptyline, indomethacin or viagra can cause urine to turn blue. Urine can also turn blue due to a rare disease called benign familial hypercalcemia. It is a rare hereditary disease that is known with the "blue diaper syndrome" because it can occur in young children who will urinate blue.

Black or dark brown

The disease called alkaptonuria is the main cause of a person's urine being black . On the other hand, jaundice (yellowing of the skin) of hepatic cause will also make the urine turn dark brown. Laxative medications, chloroquine, levodopa, nitrofurantoin, metronidazole, methyldopa or hydroquinone can also cause a black or brown urine color.
